  • About me
I am Souley Oumarou Diallo Mo Djalanta Jaydo which means Souley Oumarou the one that doesn't laugh with idiots. For my mother, I'm koizey yawo, meaning the visitor of great kings (I prefer that one).

I grew up in the landlocked West African country of Niger. When I was about twelve or thirteen years of age, I got a vintage Kodak camera from my best friend who got it from his dad who was a student in Senegal in the sixties. I was fascinated by what the camera could do. However, I was never able to use it because I could not afford to buy the $2 film rolls. Yet I still loved it. I loved the sound of the shutter release of the empty camera. I loved the smell of the camera, the ergonomics, and even the fonts of the yellow and orange Kodak logo. I would go into my mom's hut (straw hut) which is usually dark even during the day. I would point the camera toward the door and release the shutter to see the light come in through the opening of the aperture blades. I wanted to use it so bad but never got a chance. After high school, I was awarded a government scholarship to study in Algeria. I gave the camera away to my friend before leaving the country. I was in Algeria for three years, then I moved to New York to pursue my education. In 2005 I had a roommate who was studying filmmaking at NYU Tisch. I would watch him edit his student films and was amazed by how he could control the images. I wanted to learn that, he gave me a copy of Final Cut Pro 5, I bought the study guides by Diane Weynand and spend countless hours practicing on a new 24" iMac that I just purchased from the Apple store on 5th Avenue in Manhattan. I ended up earning a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Baruch College and worked on Wall Street as a Senior Tax Reclaims Associate for 6 years. My passion for film never left me, I, therefore, made up my mind to leave Wall Street to pursue my passion for film and photography. I registered at George Washington University in DC to learn everything I could about documentary filmmaking and produce Lift me up an 18 min documentary about therapeutic horseback riding. While at George Washington University, I worked at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts filming live shows at the Millennium Stage and editing promotional videos for upcoming shows. I then moved to Qatar where I worked for three different film production houses as well as a freelancer filming mostly sports content for the local racing club (drag races, drift competitions, and desert bashing with sand cars) and corporate promo videos. I ended up being the official videographer for the Qatar Supercars Club. I moved back to the US after five years to work in this field that I love so much.
